Mound View Cemetery, established in 1833, was named after an ancient Indian Mound located in the western part of the cemetery. Complete records of the cemetery plots were not kept until 1853. There are a few whose death dates occurred previous to 1833, however, it is believed that they were moved here from the Presbyterian Cemetery which was located at 105 East Chestnut Street.

Open: Tours are typically May 1-20 each year.

The Mount Vernon and Knox County area has long been known for its abundance of dogwood trees. The flowering trees grow wild throughout most of the county, particularly in the hills of eastern Knox County where the trees are plentiful and noted for their extra large blooms. Entire hillsides can be found engulfed in a sea of white in early spring. Pink dogwoods are also prominent in this area and local residents report the "pink is more vibrant than any other you'll ever find."

Welcome

Peace, harmony, serenity. These are gifts that gardens give.

As you explore our grand vistas and intimate niches, we hope you'll find tranquility here...and inspiration.

Schnormeier Gardens are located in the gentle rolling hills of central Ohio. We began building the gardens in 1996. Over the years they have grown to include fifty acres of manicured lawns, ten lakes, a variety of discrete garden areas and several waterfalls.

The focal point of the property is a spectacular Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home. This private residence was completed in 1994. Other structures on the property include a Japanese teahouse, garden house, Chinese pavilion and arched bridge. An ever growing collection of unique sculptures are also located on the grounds.

Our gardens have a distinct Asian flavor and feature a variety of plantings rich in color and texture. Rare conifers are plentiful here. Large boulders and stone walls add dimension and contrast to the landscape. Designed with a bold vision and attention to detail, the gardens offer delightful viewing in any season.

It has been said that a garden can have a soul...but only if it is shared with others. We are delighted to share ours with you.

Walking Tour of Historic Homes
Knox County Historical Museum
997 Harcourt Road
Mount Vernon, OH  43050

740-393-5247

Mount Vernon is blessed with a unique mixture of architectural treasures that reflect the town's prosperity through nearly two centuries. The walking tour of historic homes will show some of Mount Vernon's most gracious structures. The tour will provide a wealth of information about Mount Vernon's architectural history and some of the characters that have lived within these lavish buildings.

The tour includes three streets that have been registered as historic districts through the National Register of Historic Places, North Main Street, East High Street, and East Gambier Street. It is obvious that the people, who own these homes, take great pride in them, making sure that the exteriors are as pristine as their lawns.
