Check out the highlights from the America 250 Ohio Annual Report and learn how Knox County is celebrating all year long.

As we approach the United States’ semiquincentennial in 2026, Ohio is already setting the stage for a monumental celebration. The recently released America 250 Ohio 2025 Annual Report highlights a year of incredible momentum, community engagement, and deep historical reflection. From the shores of Lake Erie to the banks of the Ohio River, the Buckeye State is proving that you don’t have to be one of the original thirteen colonies to have a foundational story to tell. And Knox County is proud to sit right in the Heart of it All!

A State United: Every County On Board

One of the most impressive milestones of 2025 was achieving 100% participation across the state. All 88 Ohio counties have officially signed up to participate in the 2026 festivities. This effort was bolstered by over $278,000 in grants distributed to 57 communities to jumpstart their local projects. Knox County arts partner, Mount Vernon Arts Consortium received a grant to bring an Ohio Goes to the Movies Event to Ariel-Foundation Park this summer. Save the date for July 26th, where we will be screening “Bye Bye Birdie” starring Mount Vernon native, Paul Lynde.

Trails, Tales, and Trees

The report showcases several signature programs designed to connect Ohioans with their heritage:

  • The Trails Program: Ohio launched three new self-guided journeys—the Creativity Trail, the Lake Erie to Ohio River Trail, and the Innovation Trail—representing over 300 small businesses, museums, and natural sites [01:08]. Mount Vernon’s very own Ariel-Foundation Park is featured on the Creativity for its rich history surrounding glass making and manufacturing.

  • Heritage Trees: In an effort to leave a living legacy, the "Heritage Trees" program successfully planted native Ohio white oaks in 21 counties, with plans to reach 67 more in 2026 [02:18]. Tree Planting and planning is well underway in Knox County. Through AM250-Ohio support, we hope to see a new native tree planted in the city and all our surrounding villages in Knox County.

  • Murals Across Ohio: In partnership with the Ohio Arts Council, over 700 murals have been documented in a digital database, celebrating the visual stories of local communities [03:10]. Five murals in Knox County are featured on the Mural Across Ohio map. Centerburg, Fredericktown and Mount Vernon have murals highlighting their unique history and local flair.

Honoring Local Stories

Locally, our team and the Mount Vernon/Knox County Public Library have launched the Knox Voices community storytelling project in honor of the America 250-Ohio celebration, aimed at creating a digital "time capsule" of Knox County's history and heritage. Residents (of all ages) are invited to share their personal memories, family histories, and reflections on community growth to help capture the vibrant tapestry of the county as it prepares for the nation's 250th anniversary in 2026. The project covers a wide range of themes, including local traditions, business innovation, agricultural history, and personal reflections on what it means to live in Knox County. The form will remain open until 2026, allowing stories and photos to be collected and potentially shared publicly to celebrate the shared legacy of the community. Follow this LINK to share now :)

Looking Ahead to 2026

The momentum isn’t slowing down. Looking forward, Ohioans can expect:

  • Ohio Goes to the Movies: Over 250 venues will screen Ohio-centric films for 250 days [01:50].

  • The 250 Buckeye Train Ride: A special historic train journey in April 2026 focusing on the state's transportation history [05:23].

  • Inclusive History: The "Undertold Stories" committee is working hard to ensure the contributions of women, the LGBTQ+ community, and people of all races and religions are recognized as part of the American story [06:55].

Ohio’s 250th celebration is more than just a party—it’s a comprehensive look at where we’ve been and where we’re going. As the report concludes, this is a "once-in-a-generation experience" that every Ohioan is invited to join [08:11].
