All aboard to adventure.
A junction between arrival and departure, you'll find us ready to greet you at the CA&C Visitor Center. Constructed in 1905 as a passenger station for The Cleveland, Akron and Columbus Railroad, this rail station was a passageway for many visitors, industry and commerce from 1905 to 1952, when the last passenger train went through.
The CA&C Visitor Center houses the Knox County Chamber of Commerce and Knox County Convention & Visitors Bureau offices. This shared use allows the building to be opened as a welcome center for both the city and the county, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
In January 2023, in support of the City of Mount Vernon Parks Department Master Plan and collaborative interests of local organizations that desire to further enhance outdoor public art and trails, Ariel Foundation contributed a special gift, a bronze replica Statue of Liberty, to the city.
In July 2024, The City of Mount Vernon officially named the green space surrounding the CA&C Visitor Center, American Heritage Park. American Heritage Park serves as the backbone to the City of Mount Vernon recreation and transportation network; the true confluence of rich history, influence in industry and dedication to service. With a dedication ceremony on October 28th, 2024 (138 years, to the day, of the original Statue of Liberty Dedication in New York, NY) The City of Mount Vernon is excited to welcome visitors to Liberty Plaza, a showcase for this awe-inspiring public art and symbolic Statue of Liberty.
Nine feet and 1,500lbs, this bronze statue made from the final maquette (plaster form) utilized by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi in planning for his creation of what was originally known as Liberty Enlightening the World. Mount Vernon’s Statue of Liberty now will greet the community, trail-users, visitors and all who come to the city seeking new opportunities.
