Tired of giving the same old gift card or mass-produced trinket? All year, we’re talking about the magic of shopping local, especially when it comes to finding truly unique, handcrafted treasures right here in Knox County. Not only does it support our artists and makers, but it also means you're giving a gift with a story, soul, and a whole lot of heart.
The Power of the Handcrafted Touch
There's something inherently special about an item made by hand. It carries the energy of its creator, the slight imperfections that make it perfectly unique, and the promise of lasting quality that machine-made goods often lack. When you choose a handcrafted gift, you're not just buying an object; you're investing in an artist's passion, their skill, and a piece of local culture. These aren't gifts that get forgotten in a drawer – they become cherished keepsakes, conversation starters, and beloved additions to a home.
A Visit to Pine Row Studio
Tucked away, right off South Main Street in downtown Mount Vernon, Pine Row Studio is a haven for exquisite ceramic art.
Step inside the studio, and you're immediately struck by the tactile beauty achieved by their co-op of artists. It was a cold and rainy afternoon when we decided to shop around downtown, but when we walked in we were greeted with the warmest welcome. Pamela, owner and operator of Pine Row Studio, and her four-legged assistant Phoebe, welcomed us in and helped us shop. We were looking for unique gifts for a few special people on our list;
coffee mug for mom’s collection (Mother’s Day)
espresso cups for my aunt (Wedding Gift)
a handcrafted planter for my friend (New Job Gift)
From elegant mugs that make your morning coffee ritual feel gourmet, to stunning serving platters that elevate any meal, and decorative pieces that add warmth and character to any space – each item tells its own story. The colors are rich, the glazes are captivating, and you can truly feel the care that went into every turn of the wheel and every brushstroke. It’s the perfect place to find a gift for:
The coffee or tea lover (because a handcrafted mug just hits different!)
The home décor enthusiast who appreciates unique accents.
Anyone who loves to entertain.
Or simply someone who appreciates beautiful, functional art.
Visiting the studio isn't just a shopping trip; it's an experience. During this trip we had the chance to visit with Pamela, as she told us about her latest six week adventure to a ceramic artists residency in Tuscany. Giving us a sneak peek at her new work and sharing fun stories from her trip. Most recently, Pamela is excited to share her work was juried into the Will of the Kiln. Out of 140+ pieces that the esteemed jurors reviewed, her woodfired aryballos bottle is one of the 12 that were accepted. Pamela’s work will be featured at the show in NewHaven, CT this summer; the culminating exhibition of the 10-day woodfiring workshop at the New England Woodfire Conference.
