Hellbender Discovery Day

Hellbender Discovery Day

Ariel-Foundation Park

10 Pittsburgh Ave
Mt Vernon, OH 43050

Schedule

Jun 13, 2026 1:00pm - 5:00pm

Organizer: Presented by Rural Action in partnership with Ariel-Foundation Park

Venue: Ariel-Foundation Park

Come discover the hidden life of our local waterways during Hellbender Discovery Day—an afternoon of hands-on activities, film, and guided exploration along the Kokosing River.

Meet one of Ohio’s most fascinating (and elusive) residents—the Eastern Hellbender. This giant salamander, sometimes called a “snot otter” or "devil dog," can grow up to two feet long and lives in clean, healthy streams like the Kokosing. As an indicator species, hellbenders help tell us how our waterways are doing—and why protecting them matters.

Event Schedule:
1:00–2:00 PM
Watershed Activities & Games
Family-friendly, hands-on activities celebrating the Eastern Hellbender and our local waterways. Meet natural resource experts and learn about aquatic wildlife and conservation.

2:00–3:00 PM
Eastern Hellbender Film Screening
Watch two short films on hellbenders and stream restoration, followed by a Q&A with watershed and wildlife experts.

3:00–5:00 PM
Guided Kokosing Scenic River Exploration with ODNR
Explore the Kokosing River side-by-side with watershed professionals from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Discover first-hand hidden wildlife just below the water and learn about aquatic habitat that supports life along the way.
(Outdoor clothing and closed-toe shoes are recommended.)
