Venue: Knox Memorials Veterans Hall

The Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County is delighted to host Ric S. Sheffield, acclaimed local author and Emeritus professor of Legal Studies and Sociology at Kenyon College for a reading and discussion of False Promises: The Struggle for Black Voting Rights in 1800s Ohio. False Promises is a collection of stories of courage and resolve as Black men tried to exercise their voting rights as citizens in late-1800s Ohio. These stories reveal how contemporary voter-suppression tactics have roots in Ohio’s history of resistance to universal suffrage and challenge the perception that voting rights injustices were solely confined to the South. Tuesday, October 28th 6:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. Veterans Hall, Knox Memorial Building 112 East High Street, 2nd Floor, Mount Vernon, OH 43050 A limited number of complimentary copies of False Promises will be available to patrons at the Mount Vernon Library after October 20th on a first-come, first-served basis. A few additional copies will be available to event attendees on October 28th. All Library programs are free and open to the public.
