A serene nature preserve in Fredericktown, Ohio. Property owned by Fredericktown natives, John and Lori Ackerman was donated to the Fredericktown Recreation District in 2012. This 52 acre property is home to a 22 acre pond and wetland area. Enjoy the nature with walking trails, bird blinds and diverse wildlife.
Calling all birders! 165 species of birds have been either seen or heard at Ackerman Nature Preserve, through documentation on eBird.org (a web-based platform that is among the world’s largest biodiversity-related science projects, supported by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology). When birds are documented through this free to use platform and the data is available to the public, it is easy to know which species should be expected during particular seasons in the wetland.
Don't forget! Binoculars or birding scopes are often helpful to birders. Cameras with long-range lenses will allow visitors to take photos of birds in their natural habitats. Most of all, birders need to bring their patience and ability to watch quietly. The birds have adjusted well to the bird blinds, and are often seen very close to the front of edge of the blinds. The blinds have an open interior with window openings at various heights, allowing for children and adults, as well as options for standing or wheelchair use.
