The Rhythm of Remembrance: How Knox Voices Found Its Feet on the Kenyon Stage

There is a timeless magic that happens when a new generation pauses to listen to an old story. It is more than just learning history; it is an act of deep empathy, a passing of the baton, and a way to ensure that the memories that shaped our community are never forgotten.

This month, as the Knox County Convention & Visitors Bureau celebrates our rich tapestry of arts, culture, and literature, we are thrilled to share an extraordinary community collaboration that brings our ongoing Knox Voices storytelling initiative to life in a way we never could have anticipated: through the power of dance.

Students from Kenyon College’s dance department recently took the raw, written, and spoken narratives collected through Knox Voices and translated them from the page straight to the stage. The result? A breathtaking testament to how old stories can find entirely new ways to be told, proving that our history doesn’t just live in archives—it moves across time.

Moving Across Time: The Interpretive Adaptations

The students in Professor Kora Radella’s Movement for Performance class were tasked with a unique challenge: take five distinct Knox Voices narratives and transform them into group projects and live performances. These weren't just standard choreographies; they were deeply personal, interpretive adaptations.

Featured Stories included….

A story of war, immigration and the American Dream unfolding at the Mount Vernon PPG factory.

A story of Apple Valley’s beginning, the lakes first marina and a family legacy rooted in community.

A story of a Knox County Sheriff who had bootlegger enemies in the North East territory during the height prohibition.

A story of a family’s migration, by foot, from Connecticut to plant their roots in Danville.

A story of a carpenter whose craft and skill helped shape the Kenyon College campus and buildings.

The dancers used their bodies to trace the emotional highs and lows of our neighbors' lived experiences, giving physical form to the spoken word and capturing the very essence of what makes our region unique; fortitude, tenacity, hard work and the creativity to build something much bigger than ourselves. Through their performances, a bridge was built between the young creators of today and the local storytellers of yesterday.

Stepping Into the Past: The Ohio Eastern Star Collaboration

Simultaneously, the Advanced Choreography II class embarked on an even deeper intergenerational journey. They paired up directly with residents at the Ohio Eastern Star Home right here in Mount Vernon.

The students didn't just choreograph, they listened. They spent time sitting with the residents, gathering their personal "stories”; memories of youth, love, hardship, and triumphs rooted in the changing landscapes of Knox County. The dancers then took those precious oral histories back to the studio, transforming the residents' spoken words into beautiful, evocative dance pieces. It was a powerful reminder of how much the younger generation can learn simply by slowing down, listening intently, and finding a creative, moving way to honor the elders of our community.

"This project beautifully demonstrates that there are always fresh, innovative mediums to express our history. When we listen to one another, we don't just preserve the past—we weave it into the fabric of our future." - Olivia Toth, Knox County CVB Executive Director.
